Community Resource Exchange (CRE) this month will hold three additional training and capacity-building workshops to support nonprofit and community-based organizations serving communities across New York City — particularly those in hard-to-count neighborhoods—with their 2020 Census education and outreach efforts.
CRE, a 40-year-old nonprofit consulting firm that provides the strategies and tools to build sustainable, high-performing organizations that improve people’s lives and drive social change, is a member of the New York Counts 2020 Steering Committee. The broad-based statewide coalition partners with state and city government officials to maximize Census participation.
“The 2020 Census brings unique challenges,” said Katie Leonberger, president and chief executive officer of CRE. “Distrust in government is high. This will be the first digital census with an online approach, which may be compromised because 35 percent of U.S. adults do not have Internet access at home. And while there will not be a question about citizenship on the 2020 Census, there is residual fear among the immigrant community about filling out a government form given the recent attempt for such a question, as well as ongoing anti-immigrant rhetoric and policies coming from Washington. Nonprofits are positioned to work with their communities to combat these challenges, and we are delighted to support them in doing so.”
Funded by a New York City Council grant, and working in partnership with the Mayor’s Office of the Census, CRE has developed training materials and tools to help community-based organizations (CBOs) support a complete citywide Census count. This past fall, the organization began holding a series of free, half-day Census 101 trainings — focusing on why the Census matters and how organizations can contribute to building awareness and education. These workshops continue this month.
The January sessions will be held at the CRE offices at 42 Broadway, 20th Floor, in Lower Manhattan on Friday, Jan. 17 at 9:30 am; Friday, Jan. 24 at 9:30 am; and Thursday, Jan. 30 at 9:30 am. Dates for workshops in the outer boroughs will be announced at a later date.
Additionally, in early 2020, CRE will hold several, free, full-day Census 201 trainings for organizations interested in doing outreach and activation work.
Census 101 and Census 201 trainings are free and open to CBOs, members of local complete count committees, faith-based organizations, and local libraries in the city. RSVPs are required for all sessions, and individuals can register at www.creny
