West Indies Women defeats Sri Lanka

West Indies Women completed 3-0 series whitewash over Sri Lanka in the final One-Day International (ODI) at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in South Trinidad on Sunday, as part of the ICC Women’s Championships for qualification to World Cup 2021.

West Indies Women won by 40 runs after rain restricted the 50 overs to 45 per innings.

Sri Lanka won the toss and sent in the regional women to take first strike, but they started slowly and were 27 for the loss of one wicket after 10 overs. Captain Stafanie Taylor made 41, hitting 4 fours in her contribution.

Taylor and Hayley Matthews shared a 73-run partnership for the second wicket after Matthews was bowled for 41.

Merrisa Aguilleira came in and scored 37 not out with Taylor, who struck 55 as the West Indies reached 182 for 8 from their 45 overs.

Shashikala Siriwardene was the pick of the Sri Lanka bowlers, taking 3 for 26.

In the chase to score 183 for victory, Sri Lanka was dismissed for 142 in 40 overs, falling short by 40 runs.

Stafanie Taylor was the best bowler for the West Indies Women taking three for 29. She was named Player of the Match and the Series.

The tour now moves on to the Coolidge Cricket Ground in Antigua for the Twenty20 matches next week.
