West Indies which was facing defeat on the final day of the second Test against India at Sabina Park, Jamaica, escaped with an unlikely draw.
Barbadian Roston Chase and middle order batsmen Jermaine Blackwood (63), wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich (74) and Captain Jason Holder (64) managed to hold off the Indian bowlers until play was called off about half an hour before close on the final day (Wednesday). The West Indies made 388 for six wickets after reeling at 48 for four and still needing another 256 to make India bat again.
The fourth day was ruled out because of rain.
Chase, playing in his only second Test match, scored 137 not out to lead the regional side to safety.
He became just the fourth West Indies players to score a century and take five wickets in the same Test and the first to do so in 50 years.
Another Barbadian, Gary Sobers, the only player to accomplish the feat twice, last achieved that double in l966.
The West Indies were bowled out for 196 in their first innings, while India scored 500 for six declared.
The Windies were asked to follow on, but on the fourth day rain had threatened to ruin the rest of the match. India leads the four-match series 1-0.
