Last winter, Britt Webley competed on a very good indoor track team at Uniondale High School. However, he did not qualify for the New York State season ending meet in his specialty, the hurdles.
Now with the top senior athletes in Nassau County from last year’s class in June, graduating, Webley has moved up and has an excellent chance of going to the State championships.
Webley is coming off an 8:18 performance for first place in the 55-meter hurdles finals and defeated teammate Roren Aitcheson (8:34) for runner-up spot. Another Uniondale athlete Hughdaine Williams finished fourth in 8:56 in the same event and section. Uniondale is once again strong in the hurdles.
“Last year the good hurdlers made me who I am today,” Webley said after the hurdles finals in the Conference 1-Conference 3 meet. “Working with them made me progress. And I keep advancing all the time.”
With last week’s victory, the 17-year-old student athlete earned all-Conference honors in a meet contested at St. Anthony’s High School in Huntington, Long Island.
“It’s a great accomplishment to be an all-conference runner,” the 6’3 ½” student athlete added. “Since it (the race and its outcome) were hard, I had to work for it. I’m glad I did it.”
At this height, he could play basketball as he is tall enough but he has a passion for track.
Britt doesn’t hold any records at Uniondale as yet. His immediate goal is to win the hurdles in the County Meet and qualify for the State Meet.
While Britt is a native of Uniondale, his father Errol is a native of the Jamaica, West Indies, where he was on the Jamaican national cricket team at one time.
“Hopefully, he’s very proud of me,” Britt said. “I try to do it for my family, because I love them very much. I run at the fullest of my potential.”
He is coached by Denis Kornfield and his assistant coach Elijah Blue.
“They have taught me that no matter who your opponent is, run your race, and run the greatest to your potential,” he went on. “Then you can never get beaten.”
Britt, a senior, has not made up his mind about college. But he did mention that he would like to go to Liberty University, because it has great runners. He feels that he could fit in next September. Hopefully, he should have some good offers in the spring when he will be completing his fourth year on the indoor, outdoor and cross country teams at Uniondale.
