With the game scoreless and appearing set for extra-time play, an 89th minute lone goal injection from captain Hadan Holligan into Ellerton’s net proved to be the decider and earned Weymouth Wales first lien on Barbados’ Capelli Football Cup plus $25,000.
The spoils were however shared after this closely fought Sunday night action at Wildey Astroturf in the final for the inaugural Capelli Sport Super Cup, organised by the Barbados football Association, as Ellerton’s captain, Shakille Belle, who mustered 10 goals throughout the competition, earned the MVP award that came with a brand new car.
The Ellerton team also walked away with a $10,000 runner-up prize for the island’s new professional competition involving 24 of the top teams that kicked off late August.
Barbados Defence Force outplayed University of the West Indies Blackbirds to earn $5,000 for the third-place finisher.
Wales head coach Thomas Jordan said that despite the team entering the final as the underdog his players were confident that they had greater endurance than the Ellerton side.
“We always knew in the second half we would have a better game and that was the game plan.
“Ellerton gave us a good game tonight. We had to struggle for a long, long time.”
MVP, Belle said, “I feel good to know the hard work paid off even though we didn’t win the entire tournament”.
