Honorary Doctor of Laws (LLD) degrees are to be conferred on cricket icon Brian Lara, Sir Fenton Ramsahoye QC and former Ambassador Kamaluddin Mohammed.
Artist Donald “Jackie” Hinkson and musician Roy Cape will receive the honorary Doctor of Letters (DLitt) degrees, according to the government’s web site.
The University of the West Indies (UWI) says it will formally acknowledge the contributions that 20 Caribbean icons have made to regional advancement when it confers the honorary degrees at the annual graduation ceremonies to he held across its four campuses.
The ceremonies are to begin on Oct. 15 with the Open Campus Graduation, where Dame Pearlette Louisy, governor general of St. Lucia and Aldwin Bully, cultural administrator, will receive the honorary Doctor of Laws (LLD) and Doctors of Letters (DLitt) degrees, respectively.
Graduation ceremonies at the Cave Hill campus in Barbados will claim the spotlight on Oct. 22, when the Most Rev. Dr. The Honorable WD Holder and Professor Compton Bourne receive the honorary LLD; and Dr. Shirley Braithwaite, the honorary Doctor of Sciences (DSc) degree.
From Oct. 27 to 29, the celebrations move to the St. Augustine campus in Trinidad, where the honorary LLD will be conferred on Lara, Sir Fenton, and Mohammed, while Hinkson and Cape will receive the DLitt degree.
On Nov. 4 and 5 the Mona campus in Jamaica will host its graduation ceremony. Minna Israel, Earl Jarett and sprinter Usain Bolt, will receive the honorary LLD.
