The Jamaican Olympic Association (JOA) said that despite an injury that kept sprint king Usain Bolt from the qualifying trials, he has been named on the Jamaica team in the 100xm races, 200xm and 4×100 meters races for the Rio Olympics next month.
The six-time Olympic gold medalist was forced to withdraw from the country’s trials earlier this month with a hamstring injury but was allowed on Jamaica’s team headed to the Rio Summer Games after applying for a medical exemption.
Unlike in the United States, where the first three finishers in the trials qualify for Olympic places, Jamaica’s selection policy allows medical exemptions.
Bolt and Olympic 110m hurdles bronze medalist Hansle Parchment were among four athletes named to the Olympic team after receiving medical exemptions from the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association.
Jamaica is sending a delegation of 63 athletes representing three sporting disciplines for the Aug. 5-21 Rio Olympics.
