She sang her songs of joy.
A Brooklyn-based soprano performed sacred and classic songs at her concert at the South Oxford Space on Nov. 4. Singer Marilyn Kim Oliver headlined her intimate show, “Classical and Contemporary Musical Gems,” and guests were thrilled by her singing.
“Just the creative talent on stage was amazing — it was my first time going to a show like this and it was really great,” said Michelle Linton, who is a friend of Oliver.
Serenading dozens of guests with her voice, she said many people were overjoyed with the show.
“It was fabulous — everything went so well and everyone said we did great and they really enjoyed the music,” said Oliver.
Accompanying her was tenor Kerry Stubbs and accompanist Ivan Thomas, who played guitar and the piano. Together they sang classical songs such as “Ave Maria” and “Let the Bright Seraphim,” many from composers such as George Handel, Wolfgang Mozart, Franz Schubert, and Rodgers and Hammerstein.
Oliver, who is Christian, said she particularly chose those songs for her show in an effort to bring positive music in response to all the chaos happening globally.
“We’ve had hurricanes, fires, and now a shooting and all of these terrible things, and I wanted to rethink what I wanted to do and communicate for the program,” said Oliver. “I felt I needed to touch the heart and spirit of people and draw them away from the upheaval and let them refocus on Christ.”
