The Caribbean Film Academy that has been entertaining moviegoers with stirring films by gifted filmmakers from the region since 2012 is proud to debut its series at the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Rose Cinemas, beginning on Tuesday, April 7. Showtime is 7:30 p.m.
Set to premier the acclaimed Trinidadian crime film “God Loves The Fighter” to kick-off its partnership with BAMcinematek, CaFA a non-profit dedicated to the promotion and support of Caribbean filmmaking and filmmakers, will welcome, Damian Marcano to its series to showcase his film, and a post-screening Q&A.
The spirited flick that captured audiences during its year long showing at international film festivals will give Caribbean immigrants and first-time generation Caribbean Americans outside of the region, a look into the urban dram, set in the twin-island, said founder of CaFA, Romola Lucas.
Featuring first-time actors, the film, God Loves the Fighter, has been compared to “Brazil’s City of God” and the classic Jamaican film, “The Harder They Come,” according to Lucas.
With intoxicating visuals and a Soca music soundtrack, the flick is an exploration into the illicit underworld in Trinidad’s capital city of Port-of-Spain.
In his directorial debut, Damian Marcano dispel the archetypes of the beach-laden, carnival-minded landscape most think they know, in its modern take of inner-city struggles.
CaFA’s president Romala Lucas, who is presenting “God Loves The Fighter” in collaboration with independent film programmer Curtis Caesar, said the new Caribbean Film Series would shed light on the richness and vitality of Caribbean cinema.
“Many Caribbean nationals are active consumes of foreign media and ‘God Loves The Fighter’ provides an opportunity for them to support a Caribbean-made film with a similar aesthetic,” said Lucas.
She added. “With the international success of independently made films like Storm Saulter’s ‘Better Mus’ Come,’ Patricia Benoit’s ‘Stones in the Sun,’ and ‘Fatal Assistance’ by Raoul Peck, the Caribbean is poised to claim its spot in the world filmmaking marketplace.”
The evening’s screening will begin with the short film “Vivre” (13 minutes-2013) by Martinican director Maharaki.
The soundtrack for “God Loves the Fighter” – Laventille will be available for sale following the film screening.
