THE AFRICAN DIASPORA INTERNATIONAL FILM FEST

For the month of July, ADIFF curates the Trans-Cultural Dialogues Film Series, an attempt to illustrate an international dialogue between cultures in different parts of the world. The series has an international perspective that is built around a need to understand our human experience on a larger scale.

From an African-American artist who exhibits his work in Cuba to the influence of African culture on the development of the Flamenco, all the films expose the viewer to a cultural dialogue of multiple proportions. The series will be held at Teachers College, Columbia University from July 5 to 7.

Highlighting the series is the International Art In Cuba program with the screenings of The Black Mozart in Cuba, the latest act in the rehabilitation of the memory of musician extraordinaire Joseph Boulogne, Le Chevalier de Saint-Georges (1745-1799) and screening of the documentary Resistance which gets close to the essence of the art of the African American artist Ben Jones. It documents his powerful exhibition RESISTANCE presented at Cuba’s most important cultural institution Museo National de Bellas Artes. Screening followed by Q&A with Ben Jones and reception.

Another highlight is the sneak preview screening of Black N Black, a documentary that explores the relationship between African Americans and African immigrants to the United States. Screening is followed by a Q&A with filmmaker Zadi Zokou.

Also in the program are Gurumbe: Afro-Andalusian Memories that illustrates the fundamental contribution of Africans to the art form of Flamenco and Mama Africa, Miriam Makeba a documentary with rare archival footage of Miriam Makeba’s performances that traces the remarkable life journey of this formidable South African activist and performer.

For its retrospective screening, ADIFF brings back Mira Nair’s classic Mississippi Masala, featuring a young and dazzling Denzel Washington.

ADIFF Trans-Cultural Dialogues Film Series will be at Teachers College, Columbia University – 525 W 120th St. Tickets are $11 and $13. Weekend Pass is $40.
