Amid cheers for the 120 competing high schools for the top championship prize at the Issa Boys and Girls in Jamaica’s annual premiere sports contest, Team Jamaica Bickle launched an initiative to refine hospitality provisions at the US-held Pennsylvania Relays later this year.

As athletes representing Kingston College surged ahead with hopes of surpassing 35 titles in various track and field events, inside a hospitality suite at the National Stadium, collaboration between the University of Technology, Jamaica’s School of Hospitality and Tourism Management sealed an agreement to establish Team Jamaica Bickle Hospitality Internship Program.

Announced last Friday, one day before the final sprints of the 5-day contest, a relay of activities kicked off a series of winning goals to enhance culinary arts and management during the international showdown here.

Power-brokers announced Kerisha Green, a third year student who is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in culinary arts and management at UTech as the first recipient of the internship.

“Kerisha will be actively engaged in our hospitality operations including food service, medical support coordination, transportation logistics and event planning for our fundraising activities,” Irwine Clare founder and chairman of TJB said.

“We ask that you join us in welcoming Kerisha to our team and assisting both her and TJB in furthering our mission of providing world-class support to our athletes and partners,” Clare added.

According to its web portal “TJB is the leading organization in sports providing support services for Caribbean athletes particularly Jamaicans who compete at the annual Penn Relays at the University of Pennsylvania.”

Formed in 1994, the organization banded in Queens to unite expats from the island. Throughout the years diasporans have converged on the Franklin Field Stadium to show solidarity with the initiative.

“Our event in Jamaica is the third ranking track and field competition behind the Olympics and Penn Relays,” Clare explained.

He boasted its merit citing the Olympic successes of Usain Bolt and Shelly Fraser-Pryce.

In addition to the hospitality initiative, Clare announced an April 13 Labor of Love gala at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, New York.

Themed “Celebrating Our Athletes, Our Ambassadors,” four-time Olympic bobsledder Christian “Chris” Stokes  will be lauded with the TJB Pioneer in Athletics & Exemplary Leader in Sports Award.

As a footnote, at this writing, the purple and white champions of North Street, Kingston celebrated their 100th anniversary year and added another victory to their storied history by winning their 36th championship. Congrats to the lads whose motto maintain — Fortis Cadere Cedere Non Potest — the Brave may Fall  but Never Yield.

AFUWI Aims To Donate 100 Scholarships To Needy Students

The American Foundation for the University of the West Indies plan to continue their legacy of fundraising on April 4 by hosting their 28th annual gala ceremony. Slated to be held at 583 Park Ave. in Manhattan, the event promises dancing, food and beverages as well as an award presentation to six visionaries.

Needless to say the deserving recipients will attract a stellar crowd of supporters. However, the principal aim of the AFUWI organizers is to raise enough cash to send 100 Caribbean students to attend any of the prestigious colleges throughout the region.

JA PM To Attend AFJ Charity in Miami

Jamaica’s Prime Minister Andrew Holness is confirmed to attend the April 5 charity event hosted by the American Friends of Jamaica.

Slated for Loews Coral Gables in Miami, Florida the prestigious event is renowned for its alluring appeal to diplomats and former US ambassadors who despite their expired tenures have dedicated service to ensuring needy agencies on the island benefit from their annual contributions.

It is not often that a sitting leader of government attend these social gatherings however, fresh from his meetings with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the ninth and youngest prime minister — elected at 25 —-and  now serving his fourth consecutive term in office, PM Andrew Holness will help raise the stakes.
