Caribbean Life contributing writer, Tangerine Clarke received the LFU Media Partner Award during the (LFU) Linden Fund USA 20thAnniversary Dinner and Dance, held at Antun’s in Queens, on Aug. 10. This award was given for her outstanding reporting in the Caribbean diaspora and for her accomplishments in media, during the (LFU) Linden Fund USA 20th Anniversary Dinner and Dance.
President of LFU Paula Walcott-Quintin, congratulated Clarke, a 25-year contributing writer with Caribbean Life and praised the publication for its commitment to the community.
A journalist for more than 30 years, Tangerine Clarke was also presented with a citation from the office of Brooklyn Borough President, Eric L. Adams. She expressed gratitude to the organization for acknowledging her commitment to highlighting positive aspects of the diaspora in Caribbean Life newspaper.
“I also want to thank, Schneps Media, Kenton Kirby, editor emeritus, and Kevin Williams, associate editor, for giving me a platform to showcase my work as a journalist,” she said.
“I never in my wildest dreams thought I would be honored in so many ways for my passion. I love media,” said Clarke, who received her formal training at the University Guyana, and the Guyana Chronicle in Georgetown.
“Writing to pen pals during my early school years, was a stepping stone to journalism. I spent my monthly allowance on stamps and writing paper, back then, and was inspired by reading the local newspapers.”
“I was driven by my love of writing, so I fervently studied the craft, before joining the Guyana Chronicle where my first article was published,” said the Guyanese-American reporter, who has received numerous accolades for her work.
“I say, be persistent in whatever you love, it will bring you satisfaction and great rewards.”
“In the words of President Barack Obama, ‘we need to internalize this idea of excellence.’ Not many folks spend enough time making the effort to be excellent,” said Clarke, who called on the organization to continue its “excellence” in charitable work.
A New School University, New York Journalism graduate, Clarke has published many articles about politics, arts and entertainment, travel, fashion, and community affairs.
Over the years, her articles have appeared in the Guyana Chronicle, New York edition, the Stabroeknews online, Caribbean Sport
She has traveled extensively on assignments in the Caribbean, where she covered Caribbean Fashion Weekend in Jamaica, Barbados Fashion Week, St. Kitts Fashion Weekend, the Curaçao Model Search, and Trinidad & Tobago Fashion Week.
In addition to documenting the beauty of Europe as a travel writer and photographer, Clarke has reported on the Guyana flood disaster, during a media tour in 2005, and covered World Cricket and entertainment in Guyana, in 2007.
She has received awards from the Guyana Tri-State Alliance, the Guyana Unity Movement, Women of Mission International Inc., Guyana 21st Century Leadership Now, the Guyana Cultural Association, NY, and the Brooklyn Crown Heights Lion’s Club
She has received proclamations from the New York City Council, the New York State Senate, Office of City of Jersey City, and East Orange City Council.
Clarke was one of 50 Guyanese, who received certificates from the Mayor of the City of New York, Bill deBlasio in commemoration of Guyana’s 50th Anniversary of Independence, at the Surrogate Court, New York City, in 2016.
Congresswoman Yvette Clarke, Senator John Sampson, Senator Roxanne Persaud, and Senator Kevin Parker, all honored Clarke for her superb journalistic prowess.
Clarke said she was passionate about her work as a journalist and will continue to attend seminars and conferences to enhance her skills.
Linden Felix-Johnson, host of Conversations with Linda on Power Jam Radio, and journalist, Carlyle Harry, were also honored in the Media category.
