Book Festival: World-renowned author and journalist, Gail Sheehy and Girls who Code founder Reshma Saujani discuss the need to embrace risk and failure and to boldly chart your own course. Sheehy’s new memoir, Daring: My Passages, chronicles the obstacles she encountered when she blazed a trail in the male-dominated world of journalism in the 1960s. Her earliest book, Passages, was named by a Library of Congress survey one of the ten most influential books of our time. Saujani, a former New York City Deputy Public Advocate, founded Girls Who Code to close the gender gap in technology and prepare young women for jobs of the future. chca clothing drive: Crow Hill Community Association will be conducting a clothing drive every Saturday from noon to 3 pm during September for Georgia’s Place, located at Prospect Place and Bedford Ave. Georgia’s Place is an innovative supportive housing residence for 48 formerly homeless and low-income adults. Georgia’s Place staff are committed to the health of their residents in a holistic way: mental, physical, emotional. The drive will take place in front of the former site of the CHCA Community Garden (730 Franklin Ave) between Sterling Place and Park Place. Alternatively, drop offs can also take place on Tuesdays from 5pm – 7pm at Georgia’s Place during Farmshare pick-up. New and slightly used men’s and women’s clothing. flood relief: Donations are being accepted at the Friends of Crown Heights Center located at 671 Prospect Pl., Brooklyn. Donations will also be accepted by Mirtha Colon, a Garifuna from Honduras, who operates Hondurans Against Aids out of Casa Yurumein in the Bronx. Casa Yurumein is located at 874 Prospect Ave. in the South Bronx, corner of Westchester Avenue. passport application center: Brooklyn Public Library has launched a second Passport Application Center at the Kings Highway Library providing a convenient facility for Brooklyn residents and new immigrants to apply for passports. Hours are temporarily set for 10 am–3 pm from Monday through Friday and Sunday by appointment. The Center is closed on Saturdays until further notice. Donations: St. Robert Bellarmine Church is joining efforts with the Diocese of Trenton to bring relief to victims in the hardest hit areas. The church has organized a sorting sub station in the parish and will be delivering donations to various locations shortly.
