Dozens of onlookers gathered around Central Library on Wednesday to watch rhythmic performers dancing to the sounds of Haitian drums to mark the start of Caribbean Heritage Month.
One performer said the colorful choice in costumes was a carefully considered move.
“The colors are associated with an actual dance — and It’s the first thing you see and it captures your attention,” said Sherley Davilmar, one of the performers, and artistic director of La Troupe Zetwal.
La Troupe Zetwal is a Brooklyn-based dance group specializing in Haitian dance through storytelling.
Dancers danced into the night as onlookers, and even children danced along with them for a mini carnival.
“A very young child, about eight or seven, began dancing with us. She did all the steps, and was on point,” said Davilmar.
And Davilmar says that having people join her performers is something she enjoys seeing.
“When it’s over, they’re still dancing and don’t want to sit. It’s fun watching everybody have a good time,” said Davilmar.
