Sandy D. Freeland chose healthcare as an avenue to help make a difference in people’s lives.
She says, “Having lost my mother to illness at age four in Antigua and seeing healthcare workers do their best to save her, I knew from that moment on that I would seek a career in the healthcare field.”
Ms. Freeland is employed at Village Care at 46 & Ten and has a BS in Healthcare Administration. With 26 years in the field, she is pursing her masters degree in this field.
At Village Nursing Home she started as a part time medical record clerk working her way up the ladder — medical records coordinator, medical records director and operations director.
“My former administrator at Village Nursing Home, Mrs. Aida Ramos, saw the potential in me to become a long-term care administrator, when I did not dare to dream that big.”
“I would often volunteer to assist her with small projects and remember saying to her, ‘Give it to me I can do it.’ She soon began to take notice.” At her coaching, Ms. Freeland began the pursuit of obtaining her Long-Term Administrator License.
Also a great influence on Ms. Freeland’s career is Mrs. Emma DeVito, current president & CEO of Village Care. “She encouraged me to attend a healthcare leadership institute at Baruch College and when a position became available, to accept the assistant administrator position while I was pursuing my Administrator’s License.”
“This year, upon her recommendation, I am now an assisted care facilities cabinet member with Leading Age, an association that represents numerous not-for-profit organizations, advancing policies, promoting practices, and conducting research that supports, enables and empowers people to live fully as they age.”
