Lincoln Center Out of Doors is wrapping up its three weeks of music and dance performances this weekend. There will be six more free outdoor concerts, all devoted to American Roots music.
On Friday, August 7, The Fairfield Four teams up with The McCrary Sisters launching a weekend of American Roots music. The “Rock My Soul” program will reveal how the spirit-stirring sounds of gospel sparked the rock and R&B revolution.
Singing in the traditional African American a cappella gospel style that they have been known for since the group’s inception almost 100 years ago, The Fairfield Four continue to perform original, tightly harmonized pieces and traditional favorites. Their show begins at 7 pm at Damrosch Plaza.
At 10:30 pm, the “Rocky Horror Show” will screen silent with sound transmitted via headphones.
Meanwhile at Lincoln Center’s Hearst Plaza, the chilled-out, futuristic, soul vibes of denitia and sene, at 7 pm, will evoke reminiscent sounds of Massive Attack, The Fugees, or the late-night atmospherics of The xx.
At Damrosch Plaza, Bluegrass and swings will fill the air on Saturday, Aug. 8, 2 pm. And, Bob Dylan’s Highway 61 at 7pm will be performed by slew of grammy winning singers (this will also be streamed live at www.Linco
Sunday, Aug. 9, another Americanfest concert is at 3 pm with performances evoking pop, twangy, and hard rock and also country, bluegrass, and western swing standards.
At Hearst Plaza at 3 pm, singer songwriter Iris Dement will draw from her musical vocabulary of hymn, gospel, and early country folk.
The whole series wraps up with at 7 pm with the Lyle Lovett and his Large Band. The Texan singer and bandleader “effortlessly bridges the genre gap between big-band jazz and the Grand Ole Opry. He spices his sound with bits of blues, bluegrass and grassroots folk, his reedy voice being the consistent, unifying factor among the styles” (John Serba of MLive).
