Richards, Ahye leads T&T Relay Squad

Jereem Richards and Michelle-Lee Ahye will lead the T&T contingent to the 2024 World Relays at the Thomas A Robin Stadium in Nassau, The Bahamas on May 4-5.

Richards was chosen in a six-member team to compete in the men’s 4×400 metres relay while Ahye is among five chosen for the women’s 4x100m event.

Richards will be joined by Asa Guevera, Che Lara, Shakeem McKay and Joshua St. Clair and  Timothy Frederick.

Richards helped T&T to win the 2017 World Outdoor Championships 4x400m crown. He and Guevera led T&T to gold at the 2019 World Relays in Yokohama, Japan along with Machel Cedenio and the late Deon Lendore. Richards, Guevara and Lara were also part of this country’s victorious Commonwealth Games men’s 4x400m team in 2022.

Ahye will team up with veteran Reyare Thomas, Leah Bertrand, Reese Webster and Taejah Badal for the women’s 4x100m.

Ahye, the 2018 Commonwealth Games women’s 100m winner, and Thomas helped T&T to bronze at the inaugural World Relays in 2014. They also claimed 4x100m bronze for T&T at the 2015 World Outdoor Championships.

Frederick is also among those picked for the men’s 4x100m race with Jerod Elcock and Eric Harrison, and Omari Lewis, the fastest local male sprinter for the 2024 season so far, completing the line-up.

The World Relays will be the main qualifying meet for this year’s Olympic Games in Paris, France from July 26 to Aug. 11. The top 14 countries in the 4x100m, 4x400m and mixed 4x400m in The Bahamas will be guaranteed for a spot in Paris. Two more teams will be selected thereafter based on world rankings.
