Reva Lewis, a stunning 21-year-old student of the City College of New York, majoring in Mass Communications and Public Relations was crowned Miss Grenada/USA 2010 on Saturday, Sept. 18 at Medgar Evers College Auditorium at the event marking the 19th anniversary of the pageant.
The contestants, Sola Scott (23) of Burlington College, Victoria Virgo (21) of Essex College, Carrisa Holder (25) of New York City College of Technology, Ameena Caesar (18) of La Guardia Community College, Reva Lewis (21) of The City College of New York and Marisa Mitchell (23) of Kingsborough Community College, exerted energy in their performances in casual wear, swimwear, talent, evening wear and interview questions.
The overall competition was so keen among the Spice girls that closeness of placements dominated the high points of the energy-packed evening.
Honorees, Gloria Rennie, Craig Pierre and Fish Friday Club 900 Inc. led by President Arthur Hosten, were all awarded for their contributions to community service.
Ms Cicely Mason, coordinator of the pageant, also received a Proclamation from Congresswoman Yvette Clarke for her services to the community and her unending efforts in empowering young women of the diaspora.
Derek James, consul general of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique, Jumaane Williams, councilman 45th District and Miss Mary Bishop, representing Congresswoman, Yvette Clarke were among the special guests at the concert.
The event ran smoothly and timely, and when the final results were announced it revealed winner for third runner-up Carrisa Holder; second runner-up Victoria Virgo; first runner-up Ameena Caesar, and Miss Grenada/USA 2010, Reva Lewis.
For their efforts and eventual successes after weeks of intense preparation, the contestants each received a trophy. The contestants who placed from first to fourth received cash prizes donated by the promoters of the show.
Other prizes for the evening’s performances were as follows:
Reva Lewis, winner – Miss Congenialty, Miss Fitness, Best Evening Wear, first place Personal Interview.
Ameena Caesar, first runner-up, Best Performing Talent.
The theme for this year’s pageant was “Excellence is not an Act; it’s a Habit” and the Grenadian-American Ex-Teachers Association Inc., the promoters of the pageant has remained true to its vision, and bears testimony of the theme.
For the first time in the history of the pageant the winner was crowned by Ms Ludean Maitland first runner-up in the 2009 (last year’s) Pageant. She accepted her responsibiity with pride and dignity while she paraded her gown of mint and purple – (a Tony Bowles creation) on stage with grace and poise. In her short, but inspirational speech she referred to the contestants as all winners nd encouraged them to always stay focussed.
The winner, Reva Lewis, whose philosophy is “A small mind stays local, but an inquiring mind travels,” and whose interests include writing, blogging and photography will be travelling in October to Grenada on her prize trip compliments of Air Jamaica – Caribbean Airlines and the Grenada Board of Tourism.
