Punters in Trinidad invested $1.6 million on Republic Day races. Despite the inclement weather, race fans turned out for the Republic Day event at the Santa Rosa Park, Arima to witness the 10-race card on Monday, Sept. 25.
Racing officials said it was a fair crowd compared to other Republic Day events.
Some horses liked the change in underfoot conditions from a fast track to a sloppy one.
All the races carded for the turf were switched to Main Track.
Punters wagered just over $1.6 million on the local betting.
Favourite for the Caribbean Championship “Stakes Big Man In Town” had to settle for second place behind “Battle Cry,” which was run over 1800 metres.
“Leading Lady,” the hot favourite showed her win in the Trinidad Derby was no fluke as she also won the Glenagle Stakes for fillies in a convincing fashion.
In the other feature event, the Diamond Stakes, the favorite “Whisper Light” romped away from the six-horse field.
