The New York Red Bulls woes continue, this time the misery took place in Foxboro Stadium last Saturday night, where the Red Bulls (6-6-14, 32pts.) fell behind, 2-0, to the New England Revolution at the half and struggled to tie a match for the 14th time in 26 games so far. Jamaican international Dane Richards came to the rescue with two strikes to salvage a draw.
Argentine Forward Milton Caraglio put the Revs ahead when he scored off a rebound in the 15th minute after Red Bulls goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul blocked a shot that fell to the Revolution forward. In the 37th minute, Caraglio struck again when teammate Kenny Mansally sent a cross into the goal area and Caraglio nodded in the second goal for the halftime lead.
New York pulled a goal back minutes after the second half started when defender Tim Ream sent a lofted pass behind the Revs defense and Richards was in on goal to beat goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth.
Richards came to the rescue as midfielder Joel Lindpere sent a hard cross, which the Jamaican redirected into the Revolution goal for the tie only minutes before the final whistle. The red Bulls went down to 10 men in the 69th minute when Teemu Tainio was sent off for a foul on New England midfielder Shalrie Joseph. The Red Bulls, who were without forward Thierry Henry and defender Jan Gunnar Solli because of injuries, will take on the Los Angeles Galaxy Saturday night at Red Bull Arena, at 7:00 PM.
While the Red Bulls fell to fifth place in the Eastern Conference, Columbus Crew (11-7-7, 40 pts) took a firm grip on first place in the Conference when it defeated Philadelphia, 2-1 also on Saturday night. Andres Mendoza converted a penalty kick in the 51st minute when a hand ball was called against Philadelphia (8-6-10) defender Sheanon Williams.
Emilio Renteria scored the Crew’s second goal in the 37th minute with a left-footed redirect of a pass from Rogers; Philadelphia got the equalizer when Veljko Paunovic heading in a corner kick from Trinidad and Tobago international Keon Daniel.
In other MLS games last Saturday, hosts Los Angeles Galaxy defeated San Jose Earthquakes, 2-0; hosts Portland Timbers topped Vancouver, 2-1; FC Dallas at home to Seattle Sounders, suffered a 1-0 defeat; Colorado hosted Chivas USA and both teams played to a 2-2 draw. Recently traded to Chivas from Los Angeles, Juan Pablo Angel scored one of Chivas’ goals to help in the draw. Houston beat Real Salt Lake, 3-2 and New York Red Bulls had to rally for a deficit to tie New England Revolution.
Eto’o Transfer
Inter Milan forward and Cameroon striker Samuel Eto’o is about to become one of the richest players in the world. Eto’o is expected to be permanently transferred to Anzhi Makhachkala of Russia after two years with Inter.
“Anzhi executives should arrive in Milan tonight or tomorrow morning,” said Eto’o’s agent Claudio Vigorelli to Gazzetta dello Sport, an Italian newspaper. Eto’o is expected to sign a three-year contract with the Russians worth a reported 30million euros (£26.2million) a year.
“Eto’o is in Milan awaiting developments,” said Vigorelli on Monday. “The deal is set to be completed and we shall see in the next few hours. Eto’o, 30 years old, scored 37 goals last season for Inter and led the team to the Serie A, Champions League and Coppa Italia treble in the 2009/10 campaign.
Trinidad beats India
In its first match in preparation for the CONCACAF 2014 World Cup qualifying which starts on Sept. 2, Trinidad and Tobago defeated the visiting Indian national team, 2-1. Veteran forward Stern John scored his all-time leading 70th international goal for Trinidad and Tobago and fellow forward Daryl Roberts scored in the 47th and 85th minutes. John’s goal came in the 19th minute to put the hosts ahead early at the Hasley Crawford Stadium in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad. The Trinidadians are in a group with Bermuda, Barbados and Haiti.
