It was a day of finals and semi-finals that ultimately led to Queensboro Community College defeating Kingsboro Community College for their second consecutive CUNY Community College ladies volleyball title held on the Kingsboro Campus.
In the semi-finals, all held on the same day as the finals, which immediately preceded the finals, Kingsboro orchestrated a tremendous effort to defeat the Boro of Manhattan Community College in five close sets. Regular season win leader Queensboro defeated Bronx Community College in three straight sets in the other semi-final to earn its place in the evening final.
QCC won the final match in three sets by scores of 25-15, 25-22 and 25-12 over KCC. In the final game, Kristen Brosnan was spectacular for QCC with 26 assists. Najada Xhemo provided 23 digs. Sabrina Rodriquez also had 13 digs. Samantha Leotsakos tournament MVP was part of 41 total attack points. For KCC, Alychel Waith had 11 digs and Carla Baena was part of 34 total attack points.
Leoutsakos of Queens, and previously of St. Johns Prep was named the tournament MVP. It was the second consecutive year Leoutsakos won the Tournament MVP Title.
Kristen Brosnan (#1) and Najada Xhemo (#5) from Queensboro were also named to the all-tournament team. Kingsboro’s outstanding players, named to the all-tournament team were Carla Baena (#12) and Alychel Waith (#8).
Mianabel Mendez from Bronx Community College and Olivia Ingram from the Borough of Manhattan Community College were also named to the all tournament team.
The league comprises of five teams, Queensboro, Kingsboro, Borough of Manhattan Community College, Bronx Community College and Hostos. Teams play seven games in the league schedule. The teams also play many more community colleges from around the surrounding area, including Long Island and Westchester. Queensboro’s next objective will be hosting Westchester with the hope of winning the NCAA XV regional final.
