The ribbon-cutting ceremony on June 30, at the opening of the new Parkside Playground in Brooklyn, between Bedford Ave. and Rogers Ave., was followed by special basketball, handball and chess tournaments.
Winthrop Street was closed off for a block party, with free food, refreshments and games, provided by Council Member Mathieu Eugene, in conjunction with Community Board 9 and the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation for children and their parents,
Brooklyn Parks Commissioner Kevin Jeffrey and Principal Diana Rahmaan of Public School 92 participated in the 11:00 a.m. ceremony.
Council Member Eugene provided generous support for the project through funding allocations from his capital budget.
Renovations to the park included new play equipment, swings, and safety surfacing; a new spray shower featuring a custom-designed spray sculpture and a seating area for parents and seniors; new bench seating and colorful planting beds; redesigned three full-sized basketball courts, an adult fitness area, painted games and an outdoor classroom featuring decorative concrete pavers; new game tables with benches; and new planting beds and tree pits.
