In the aftermath of the announcement made by the Trump Administration on Tuesday to end the program, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), the New York State Comptroller, Thomas P. DiNapoli has condemned the action taken by the government and called it cruel, immoral and un-American.
In his remarks DiNapoli further declared that of the over 800,000 young adults who may be affected with the end of a DACA program, 40,000 are New Yorkers who have met the requirements and are educated and have passed background checks, which allowed them to earn their DACA status.
The New York state comptroller said that the young people will also be robbed of the opportunity to work and live without fear of deportation. DiNapoli said that the decision to deport the beneficiaries of the DACA program calls for the involvement of everyone, “to join in with the immigrant youths and to fight for the DREAM Act.”
DeNapoli went on to call for better and firmer implementation on legislatives solutions that will affirm value and dignity to the immigrant community. For this DiNapoli asked that the community sought out immigrant serving organizations in New York City with unclaimed funds to ensure that they receive these funds that can help serve the immigrant community. “The organizations that serve the immigration community in New York should consider the Office of the State Comptroller an ally,” he noted.
The state comptroller also reminded the young “Dreamers” of New York state that he stands with them to fight back on the decision to end DACA.
