It was a Caribbean night at the museum.
Thousands of people celebrated Caribbean heritage and culture at the Brooklyn Museum for “caribBEING in Brooklyn” on Aug. 6. Guests danced to music, did cultural workshops, even got to watch a few films. One guest enjoyed the events atmosphere so much, she plans on coming to the museum more often.
“It was great — this was my first time at the Brooklyn Museum. I definitely need to come back more,” said Regine Jean Francois, who attended with her cousin.
“It honestly felt like a basement party. It felt like have good time and the lights matched up with the vibe of a typical Caribbean basement party.”
The event organized by caribBEING House in a partnership with the Brooklyn Museum boasted a success with about 13,000 people attending, according to its organizer.
“That was our biggest event that we’ve done. This was the biggest one that I’ve seen,” said Shelley Worrell, founder and executive director of caribBEING.
“The goal is really about celebrating the community and the culture. Every August — first Saturday is always dedicated to the Caribbean.”
Other highlights of the event was a question and answer session with viral comedian, Majah Hype, known for his precise impressions of Caribbean accents. For entertainment, international Dancehall choreographer Blacka Di Danca, taught a dance workshop, and the event concluded with the film screenings of two films — classic Jamaican flick “Rockers,” and new film “Bazodee.”
