There’s a new radio show in town.
Radio personality and host Edwin Howell, also known as The Bajan King, launched the debut of his weekly radio show “Reggae King Radio” earlier this month. The show debuted on WVIP 93.5 and is available to listeners across the Tri-state region. With his platform, Howell said he wants to create a new and broader approach to showcasing the diversity of Caribbean music.
“I’m looking to fill that void that is missing from a lot of stations,” he said. “I want to give our program a more Caribbean and international feel. If people want to know what reggae sounds like in Jamaica or Europe, so when people listen to us they will gravitate towards our program.”
He aims to recognize the global visibility of new Caribbean music from every continent.
“The uniqueness of Reggae King Radio is that we are not only going to play reggae artists from Jamaica, but from all over the world,” said Howell. “Whether it’s Alborosie in Italy or Gentleman from Germany — we mix up the music to have a more international sound.”
And people are highly interested in this particular method, said Howell.
“We have many listeners from Europe, Asia, the Caribbean and New York — we have that market so we are trying to open up that avenue to be different from the rest,” he added.
His solo hosted one-hour morning show plays every Saturday at 8 am, and is available to stream live online. The show will be the premier station listeners can tune into, to catch up on new reggae, soca, and other genres of Caribbean music, interviews with artists, and latest news, said Howell.
With more than 20 years in radio, Howell worked in radio and worked at WWRL and WLIB, where he started his Reggae King Radio block three years ago. Now on the new station the block is available to more listeners.
Howell said with his revolutionary take on presenting Caribbean music, he will help bring back the traditional weekend radio listening to Caribbean homes.
“I want people to wake up with us and feel the vibes and energy on Saturday mornings, and I want to bring that back,” he said.
