Al Sharpton’s National Action Network Convention begins on April 3 and will continue through April 6 at the Sheraton Hotel & Towers with panel discussions focusing on immigration, gun violence, race and the justice system, the Black male, housing, education and politics. According to the founder of the advocacy organization, several high-profiled politicians, legislators and victims of crime are booked to participate in the annual confab.
Among them, NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly, the parents of Trayvon Martin, Constance Malcom, the mother of Ramarley Graham, Nicole Paultre-Bell, widow of police shooting victim Sean Bell and U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder.
Topics include: the role of media; race in the justice system, women’s rights, demanding congressional rights, housing, healthcare, a panel on the Black church, sports & entertainment, corporations, a focus on youth and economic development.
Others of note slated to speak include: U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, Dennis Walcott, chancellor, NYC Department of Education,
Congressional representatives include Marcia L. Fudge (chairwoman), Hakeem Jeffries, Gregory W. Meeks and Charles B. Rangel.
