Mekalia Reid was born in Clarendon, Jamaica and migrated to the United States at an early age. She was raised primarily in Newark, New Jersey and attended an elite private boarding high school in Massachusetts.
Reid double majored in journalism and mass media and communication, and minored in philosophy at Rutgers College in New Brunswick.
After a brief career in one of the best corporate media relations departments in the country, Reid attended law school at Rutgers School of Law, Newark.
As an attorney, she worked at a top New Jersey law firm as a litigator and also in one of the finest structured finance law firms in New York City.
She currently works for a financial industry regulator, helping to restore confidence in the securities market and furthering the company’s goal of protecting investors.
Reid enjoys traveling and has visited more than 18 countries in the Americas, Caribbean, Europe and Africa, and briefly lived in South Africa.
The provision of pro bono services to those in need has remained an integral part of her legal practice.
She currently works with Partners for Woman and Justice, a New Jersey non-profit that provides free legal services to abused women who are seeking permanent restraining orders against their abusers.
