Brooklyn Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke has congratulated Brooklyn’s predominantly Black Medgar Evers College for earning a grant under the Institutions Competitive Grant Program from the United States Department of Education.
The five-year grant — for US$600,000 in the initial period — will allow the college to create programs that support the academic achievement of students.
“I want to commend President Rudolph F. Crew and his team at Medgar Evers College on earning this highly-competitive, five-year grant, which will allow the college to create programs that assist students in remaining enrolled and completing their course of study,” said Clarke, who represents the 9th Congressional District in Brooklyn.
The grant will also support programs that promote highly-effective teaching methods “that connect with students,” Clarke said.
Since it was established in 1970, the congresswoman said Medgar Evers College has offered students an “excellent opportunity both to study the liberal arts and to prepare for a professional career at a cost affordable for families in Brooklyn.”
Clarke said Medgar Evers College, under the leadership of Dr. Crew, a former public schools chancellor in New York City, has “worked tirelessly to provide every student with the skills and intellectual resources necessary to succeed in the classroom and in their future endeavors.” She said the grant will support the college’s efforts to expand opportunity “and develop the talents of the women and men who pursue an education there.
“As the representative of the Ninth Congressional District of New York, which includes Medgar Evers College, I will continue to work with Dr. Crew, his team and the entire community of Medgar Evers College to support these programs and expand opportunity in Brooklyn,” Clarke said.
