Mateo Bijoux, the son of a seamstress, grew up in the tropical paradise of Montego Bay, Jamaica.
At the age of 16, Bijoux moved to the United States to study, where he then discovered his true passion for the art of jewelry and fashion design. In 2009, the Mateo New York brand was born.
He develops creations that are inspired by his adopted city, New York, and artists such as Grace Jones, as well as memories of his childhood and his mother, who is his eternal muse.
Tough but precious, the jewels are naturally and characteristically nonchalant.
Bijoux produces beautiful jewelry that is raw by nature but fine by their inception.
He admires his mother, Carmel Harris, the most: “She is a complete source of support. She is the glue that holds everything together. My mother is the epitome of strength, beauty and resilience.”
