2023 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League semifinal opponents Club Leon and Tigres squared off in Liga MX action over the weekend before they resume their SCCL semifinal on Wednesday.
CONCACAF said on Monday that Tigres were 2-1 winners in last week’s first leg, but on Sunday night on the final matchday of the 2023 Clausura regular season, Club Leon collected a 3-0 victory over the Felinos in Leon.
“Club Leon started out the stronger of the two sides and held a 1-0 lead inside the first 17 minutes when a slaloming run from Alfonso Alvarado was capped with a superb right-footed finish inside the near post,” CONCACAF said.
“The pace of the match stayed in Club Leon’s favor and they found the back of the net again right before halftime when Brian Rubio guided a header out of the reach of Tigres GK Nahuel Guzman to make it a 2-0 lead at the break,” it added.
CONCACAF said Tigres tried to respond early in the second half, but the night belonged to Club Leon, who scored their third and final goal of the night on a clever pass from Yairo Moreno and a powerful finish from Hector Uribe in the 67’ to complete the 3-0 scoreline.
With the win, Club Leon rise to sixth in the final standings of the Liga MX regular season with a 8W-6D-3L record, while Tigres finished seventh with a mark of 7W-4D-6L mark,” CONCACAF said.
It said the two teams will resume their SCCL semifinal on Wednesday in Leon. The two other teams in the 2023 SCCL semifinals, MLS sides Los Angeles FC and Philadelphia Union, were not in action over the weekend.
