Several fashionably dressed advocates and small business owners whose contributions have been admired and honored by many were once again rewarded for their good deeds in the community by legislators, NYC Council Member Mercedes Narcisse, who represents District 46, and Assembly Member Monique Chandler Waterman, who represents District 58

The Oct. 12 awards presentation showcased collections of African attire presented by Nigerian-born Nonya Anyadiegwu as part of the 11th Annual Noni Styles runway event. The ladies wowed as they stood in the Betty Carter Auditorium for the Arts, located in the Major Owens Center, Brooklyn.

Assembly Member Monique Chandler-Waterman, an activist and advocate who co-founded East Flatbush Village, Inc., a non-profit to address the limited youth services in the community, presented Nonya Anyadiegwu with a Citation for bringing her superlative creations of classic styles from her Nigerian roots to her Brooklyn community.

“You are a beacon in the world of fashion through your designs of elegance and identity based on your rich cultural Nigerian roots and offer a platform for beauty and African fashion to flourish,” stated the citation.

Council Member Narcisse, a Haitian immigrant and Registered Nurse who Chairs the NYC Council’s Committee on Hospitals and represents Bergin Beach, Canarsie, Flatlands, Georgetown, Gerritsen Beach, Marine Park, Mill Bason, Mill Island, and Sheepshead Bay, lauded the women for their outstanding contributions to their community.

“Thank you for the amazing work you are doing my queen,” she said to Paula Harris, her legislative aide.

“I appreciate your talent. I know what you do for the community, whether through unique personal management or other professional endeavors,” she added.

She went on to praise the women, stating, “I know you’re giving your time in New York City. We appreciate talented folks like yourself and your service to the community. So often, your talents go unrecognized, but for myself, personally as a council member, it is an honor for me to present this citation as a duly elected member of the New York City Council. It is time to recognize all the talented folks, especially in the black and brown communities. Thank you,” said Council Member Narcisse.
