The “Legends In Concert Plus / Caribbean Mother’s DaySpecial” will be held Sunday, May 11, 2014 at the Boys & Girls High School, 1700 Fulton St., Brooklyn.
SKM Records / Culture BestPromotions and Hometown Studios are the organisers of the concert. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. and the showbegins at 7:30 p.m.
The legends include Mighty Sparrow, Calypso King of the World; Calypso Rose, Calypso Queen of the World; Lord Nelson, Disco Daddy; Brother Mudada, The People’s Calypsonian; Randy Isaac, representing Grenada; Mystique, representing Guyana; Betti Mac, representing Jamaica. Plus: Lennox Picou, Garth David, Benji C, Mr. Lonesome and Lani K. (Legend in the Making).
Special guests include Lady Tantalizer, Super Rod, M.C. Susan Kennedy, Oscar Rovell and MC Wassy. The performers will be accompanied by The H-Town Squad.
Mighty Sparrow Calypso King of the World, aka “Birdie.” Sparrow sings a baritone-styled vocal. Born Slinger Francisco, early hits “Jean and Dinah” & “Carnival Boycott.” Sparrow is an 11-time winner of the Calypso Monarch and eight-time winner of T&T Carnival Road March. Born in Grenada, he has become one of the Caribbean’s most successful artists. A recipient of Atlantas’s Key to the City; NewYork Mayor Ed Koch honored himwith the Mighty Sparrow Day in 1983.
Sparrow was awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree, Doctor of Letters, from the University of the West Indies in 1988. Birdie illustrates the meaning of the Calypso King of the World in 2014 after a brief health challenge. Hear the maestro sing the classic “A Mother’s Love,” “Sa Sa Yea”…and many other masterpieces.
Calypso Rose, ambassador/diva of calypso music has written more than 800 songs. In 1966, Rose wrote “Fire in Me Wire,” the first calypso ever sung for two consecutive years at a T&T Carnival. In the mid 70s, “Constable Rose” and “Do Dem Back” brought Rose her first gold disc. Born in Tobago, Rose became the first woman to win the Trinidad Road March, with “Gimme More Tempo.” In 1978, she won the title with “Come Leh We Jam,” that same year she won the male-dominated Calypso King Competition, the first time ever awarded to a woman. The competition was later changed to Calypso Monarch in Calypso Roses’ honor.
Lord Nelson, from Tobago, remains a vibrant soca star. Nelson showed his talent in the U.S. Forces in Korea as a singer and comedian. He recorded “Rude Boy” / a Hometown Studios recording adding a giant hit to songs such as “Garrot Bounce,” “Stella,” and “Disco Daddy.” Nelson, at 83 years old is expected to amaze and amuse the audience.
Brother Mudada (Allan Fortune) made his debut in 1961. Mudada was crowned Calypso Monarch in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands in 2004. He received the key to the city of Port-of-Spain in 1989. Listen to his heartfelt renditions, “No Use” & “Pan Lesson.”
Grenadian Randy Isaac has performed groovy soca across the globe. He captured the Groovy Soca Monarch in 2009 and has produced 24 albums. Hear hit after hit such as “Better Carnival,” and “Social Focus.”
Lennox Picou, a San Juan, Trinidad native has worked with Sparrow and Duke and has produced hits such as “Permission.”
