League A of the Road to W Gold Cup returns with Jamaica entering the fray in Group B with a visit to take on Panama, said CONCACAF on Monday.
It said Jamaica was slotted into Group B after coming up just short in the CONCACAF Olympic Play-In versus Canada, “but a chance to still reach the 2024 W Gold Cup is there for the taking for the Reggae Girlz.”
“Much of the same group that got Jamaica to the knockout round of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia/New Zealand will take to the field in Panama, including star GK Rebecca Spencer and dangerous attacker Khadija Shaw,” CONCACAF said.
It said Panama already has “two matches under their belt, as they split a pair of games with Guatemala during the September window.”
“The Canaleras ran out 3-0 winners in the first game in Guatemala, but fell 3-2 at home in the second game in Panama,” CONCACAF said. “FW Riley Tanner has led the way with a pair of goals, while MF Marta Cox has played a key role with a goal and an assist.”
CONCACAF said history shows that “when these two sides meet, an exciting game of football is the outcome.
“Their most memorable contest was in 2018 when Jamaica edged Panama in a penalty shootout following a 2-2 draw in the Third-Place Match of the 2018 Concacaf W Championship,” it said.
