Kingsbrook Medical Center, The New York State Alumni Association, New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services, and the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene as well as community providers of addiction and mental health services will present the third Annual Recovery Month Health Fair to educate the community and persons who are in recovery to learn about the intersect of behavioral health and primary care. The event will be held at Kingsbrook Hospital on Sept. 22, 2017 from 9 am – 3:30 pm. CASAC and Peer training hours are available.
This one-day health fair entitled “Community Integration: Employment and Family” providing presentations related to health, career, educational and vocational issues and how they pertain to the lives of people in recovery from substance use or mental health issues.
Kingsbrook hospital will lead the way with expert presenters in the area of health via their “Best Health School” program — their education outreach initiative designed to advance the health and wellness of the community.
This year, Kingsbrook’s HR Department will shed special insight on current careers in health care and the vocational skills and preparation needed to enter those fields.
The New York State Alumni Association comprises of a group of individuals in recovery from alcohol and other drug substance use who have made a decision to work together to support other individuals in recovery, focusing on families and youth. This support is given through providing information on educational and vocational opportunities, current drug policies and practices that affect peers (persons in recovery) and recreational opportunities. In addition, there is a focus on the whole person including health information.
Each year, the NYS Alumni Association plays a big in role the national celebration of Recovery Month. In September, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Association’s (SAMHSA) sponsors Recovery Month to increase awareness and understanding of mental and substance use issues and celebrate people who recover.
Kingsbrook will also offer health related testing, and community behavioral health providers will offer information on current drug use patterns in New York City and on the services they offer to the community of Brooklyn and the larger community of NYC.
