Dubbed, the Kings of Kings County Awards breakfast and ceremony at El Caribe County Club Caterers of Mill Basin, Brooklyn, 33 bankers, realtors, businessmen, management and business executives, community leaders, lawyers, doctors and publishers were honored at the Nov.7 event. Among the 33 recipients of this 3rd annual event were Barbadian descendant Charles A. Archer, Guyanese Dr. Stephen Samuel Carryl and Jamaican Trevor Romans.
Archer, who is a lawyer by profession, business manager, accountant, certified compliance and ethics professional and health care compliance professional, is co-founder and chief executive officer of the Evelyn Douglin Centre for Serving People In Need. He agrees that the award makes him “a little more whole in Brooklyn…it’s a nice little acknowledgement to receive.” He added: “I’m excited because it is the Borough I was born in; it was the Borough where I went to elementary school, went to junior high school, kissed my first girl, went on my first date, drove my first car, had my first apartment; so Brooklyn is really home.”
But he is recognized for his range and depth of community services, especially with disabled or differently abled people.
On the 18th of this month, a second book by him will be released and launched in Barbados and St. Kitts as its contributors address the issue of untapped Caribbean potential. In 2012, he published the “Everybody Paddles: A Guide to Partnership, Association, Collaboration and Togetherness” which is based on his mantra that organizations survive when everyone plays his role.
The Kings of Kings Award is an addition to a list of awards received by Dr. Carryl for his professional and humanitarian work over the years. He is the chair of surgery at Wyckoff Heights Medical Centre and president of the Overseas Medical Assistance Team (OMAT), which for 22 years has been taking medical teams to Africa and the Caribbean to enhance medical care. His “expertise is in Minimally Invasive, Laparoscopic, Bariatric and Robotic Surgeries and he was the first surgeon in Brooklyn to perform a Robotic Gastric Bypass in October 2011.” The Consumer Research Council of America recognizes him as one of America’s top surgeons.
Romans, network director of managed care, at Kings County Hospital Center, is “an accomplished healthcare professional with almost 30 years in the private and public health systems”.
From 1997 to the present, he grew the number of lives covered with contracted Health Maintenance Organizations from 5,000 to 65,000. He succeeded at integrating managed care principles in the networks of Kings County Hospital Centre, East New York Diagnostic and Treatment Centre, Dr. Susan Smith Mc Kinney Nursing and Rehabilitation Centre, and DSSM-Neponsit Adult Day Care Health Centre.
In general he has been instrumental in implementing quality management systems and performance goals for patients and medical contractors.
