Haitian-American Ka Nu Dance Theatre will perform as part of “Haitian Dance: Front and Center” at the BlakTin@ Performance Series on Friday, Oct. 15, 8:00 p.m. at Bronx Academy of Arts And Dance (BAAD), 841 Barretto Street, Bronx, N.Y. in Hunts Point.
Ka Nu’s dynamic program will include the premiere performance of “Shadow of a Pearl” – a story of the struggle that led to Haiti’s independence in 1804. BAAD’s 9th Annual BlakTin@ performance series, celebrates works by Black, Latin@ and BlakTin@ artists.
Directed by Jessica St. Vil-Ulysse, the mission of Ka Nu Dance Theatre is to promote change and peace in Haiti and around the world, by sharing with the world Haitian heritage, history, culture, and educating its audiences through contemporary modern and Afro-Caribbean Dance.
KaNu is an abbreviation for “Ka pa Nou” in Haitian-Kreyol which means “our situation.” Ka Nu Dance Theater hopes to be able to continue to share “our situation” or better yet “Ka Nu” through dance, theater and song.
“Ka Nu Dance Theater” began performing in October of 2003. They made their debut at the “International Dance of Colors Festival,” that was held at the 14th Street Educational Alliance Theater.
Since then, the company has performed at Hofstra University, Springfield High School, Brooklyn Museum, Morgan Park as part of the Long Island Dance Series, Henry Street Settlement Theatre as a part of the Dance in America series, Brooklyn Library’s “2008 Haitian Flag Day Celebration, Bronx Academy for Arts and Dance’s BAAD!Ass Women Festival, the 2009 Artist for Peace concert series.
Most recently, the group has performed at the Turkish Mission to the United Nations as a part of the Rebuilding Haiti Against All Odds Conference.
