Join the challenge

I run a not-for-profit program piloting at an underserved public school in Crown Heights – Seeds in the Middle. We empower kids to get healthy in the obesity epidemic.

We are inviting volunteers – teens and older, to join our challenge to provide students in an under-resourced school (nearly 100 percent free or reduced lunch) with a fair shake by offering to tutor and help prepare them for high-stakes tests beginning in mid-April.

Anyone who can be a math or reading tutor. Especially welcome anyone trained in teaching children with learning challenges is invited: Seniors, retired educators, please step up.

Also, you can offer a fun class at the school on Saturdays or :00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. -Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays in dance, theater, soccer, cooking, etc.) to lure in children.

Seeds in the Middle, named by fourth graders in central Brooklyn, inspires parents, educators, students and their community to access all opportunities, beginning with improving their health, enhancing arts education and greening their environment. We are joyful, respectful, educational and engaging.

Our innovative strategy to fight obesity initiates at schools. We weave together a comprehensive package to turn around ills driving down opportunity and advancement. We empower and educate all to get healthy and scale disparities. Our pilot schools are in Crown Heights, a neighborhood with one of the city’s highest obesity, diabetes, and heart disease rates and lowest academic achievement.

We teach how to grow, how to market, how to access and prepare nutritious food, how to exercise, how to engage in the arts, all the elements needed to promote life-changing lifelong health. Our partners come from all walks of life: chefs, athletes, educators, artists, builders and more.

We cross cultures. We transform gray into green, destitution into inspiration.
