Jeremiah Hyacinth is a Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) alumnus from St. Lucia.
After finishing his associate degree in 2001, Hyacinth transferred to Columbia University for his bachelor’s degree in political science with a focus on international relations.
The BMCC Student Government president was also a reporter and editor for the student newspaper, “Voice of the Voiceless.”
He took his experience of working at the publication to start the “World Scholar,” a quarterly magazine that focuses on international student life in the United States and England.
For the past three years, Hyacinth has managed a community-based organization called Project Education. Launched in May 2010, Project Education gives overseas-based St. Lucians and friends of St. Lucia an opportunity to help needy students and their families in the homeland.
Through the generosity of numerous donors, Project Education has empowered more than 1700 students by providing them with donated school supplies that their families would have otherwise had difficulty affording.
Under his direction, Project Education also successfully implemented a toy drive in September 2012 to benefit St. Lucia’s Helen Folk Dancers and Helen Television System’s annual Christmas party for underprivileged children.
With the kind support of St. Lucians and friends of St. Lucia, Project Education collected nearly 500 toys that were shipped to St. Lucia for distribution. Most recently, Project Education partnered with Hands Across the Sea, an international nonprofit organization, to bring books to disadvantaged children in St. Lucia.
In his current role as a diplomat attached at the St. Lucia Consulate in New York, and given his strong communication skills and journalistic background, Hyacinth keeps St. Lucians abreast of news and events at the Consulate via social and other media.
