Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries Tuesday night congratulated Tom Suozzi for his “decisive victory” in the special election to replace disgraced Republican Congressman George Santos in New York’s 3rd Congressional District.
“Congratulations to Congressman-elect Tom Suozzi on his decisive victory in today’s special election, defeating the much-hyped Nassau County Republican machine and its handpicked candidate,” said Jeffries, representative for the 8th Congressional District that encompasses parts of Brooklyn and Queens.
“Tom is the quintessential public servant who will return to Congress to fix the problems confronting everyday Americans and get things done in a bipartisan manner,” he added. “Extreme MAGA Republicans spent millions attacking Tom personally and distorting his distinguished public service record. The people of Queens and Nassau County didn’t buy it.
“Tom’s vision of commonsense solutions and putting people over politics prevailed,” Jeffries continued. “Congress will be better off for it.”
With 93 percent of the votes tabulated, Suozzi received 91, 338 votes, or 53.9 percent, to Republican Mazi Pilip 78,229, or 46.1 percent.
On his website, Suozzi, 61, who had represented the district before Santos, said: “Thank You! Next stop… November. We’re just getting started.”
He said serving as a public official has “allowed me to do what I always dreamed of doing: help people, clean up pollution, build buildings, solve problems, and try to make people’s lives better.”
Suozzi, trained as an attorney and Certified Public Accountant (CPA), is also the former Nassau County executive and mayor of Glen Cove.
He said he has committed his 30-year public service career to delivering for his constituents.
He said his philosophy of working with anyone who shares his goal of solving problems and delivering for his constituents has guided his career and led to “notable accomplishments on issues including protecting the environment, common-sense gun safety, full access to reproductive health care, immigration, caring for our veterans, affordable healthcare and fiscal responsibility.”
“People want to say immigration is a Republican issue, abortion is a Democratic issue,” he said. “These are the issues people care about.”
