Jamaican singing sensation, Tessanne Chin will return to perform during the St. Kitts Music Festival where she performed seven years ago. According to representatives from the St. Kitts Tourism Authority and the St. Kitts Music Festival committee, the winner of NBC’s hit reality TV competition “The Voice” is slated to perform at the 18th Annual St. Kitts Music Festival, which will take place from June 26 to June 28.
“St. Kitts Musical Festival patrons first fell in love with Tessanne when she performed here early in her career in 2007, and we are even more pleased to welcome her back to St. Kitts this year following her recent career-changing The Voice victory,” Sen. Ricky Skerritt, minister of Tourism & International Transport said.
Described as “a Jamaican, reggae, fusion, artist,” Chin earned her fame last year by winning Season 5 of NBC’s reality TV show “The Voice.” Born to musical parents and raised in Jamaica, Chin started performing at age six years-old with Cathy Levy’s Little People and Teen Players Club, one of Jamaica’s top performing arts schools, before moving to England at age 12. Upon her return to Jamaica, Chin joined the Jamaican Rock Band, “Mile High” and performed for crowds at numerous local venues. Upon leaving the group to launch her solo career, Chin started writing songs for her debut CD. Her debut single, “Hideaway,” allegedly received heavy rotation on Jamaican radio and brokered stations here. After winning “The Voice,” Chin performed at the annual Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California where the first ever “Voice” float debut on New Year’s Day.
She kicked off the year by returning home to perform at a “Shaggy and Friends” benefit concert. Chin also headlined her first show in celebration of her victory with a free concert held downtown Kingston.
SUPER SUPERBOWL CONCERT IN HARLEM SALUTES JAZZ
Harlem is not about to miss out on the Feb. 2 Super Bowl frenzy.
Not to be outdone by all the celebrations scheduled prior to SuperBowl 48, the Apollo Theater plans a Jan. 31, “Friday Night In Harlem” concert.
The event is billed as a mega-concert that will pay tribute to jazz legend and the king of swing Edward Kennedy Ellington. Popularly known as The Duke, his music will resound with featured performances by the Manhattan School of Music Swing Jazz Orchestra. A special guest performances by Nea Jazz Masters: Cecil Bridgewater and Arturo O’Farrill is also billed
To add to the game-plan, an all-star band led by contemporary jazz musicians Alex Bugnon, Victor Bailey, Lenny White and award winning vocalist Regina Belle are also planned.
The Mass Choir of First Corinthian Baptist Church will feature legendary singer/songwriter Valerie Simpson who in addition to her performance will receive the first Whitney Houston Living Legend Award.
And if all that doesn’t satisfy a super appetite for sports and entertainment add music from emerging master pianist Johnathan Baptiste. He will be presented with the Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong Legacy Award. Other Black History Month award presentations will be made to iconic sports figures and other selected public, business and entertainment personalities who attended Historic Black Colleges.
