The West Indies Players ‘Association (WIPA) and the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) annual player awards ceremony will be shifted to Jamaica this year. It was held last year in Trinidad and Tobago.
The event is scheduled for June 5, 2014 at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in Kingston.
The WIPA/WICB will partner in hosting the awards to acknowledge the top performing cricketers in the region for the year 2013.
There will be approximately 14 awards, to include the top male and female cricketers of the year, sectional prizes and the WICB and WIPA will each offer a Lifetime Achievement Award.
WIPA President and CEO Wavell Hinds has said of the partnership: “These awards have been in existence for 11 years and to have the WICB on board again for the second year shows how dedicated both parties are to the best interest of cricket in the West Indies. The region is being encouraged to partner also, as cricket is rebounding and we ought to be able to have the support of the region”.
In agreeing that the joint awards ceremony works, WICB CEO Michael Muirhead thinks they two organizations have in common- its players.
Former Jamaican Prime Minister, PJ Patterson, who now chairs the Caribbean Premier Cricket League (CPL) cricket committee, will give the feature address.
The event precedes the June 8 start of the first Test between New Zealand and the West Indies, scheduled for Sabina Park. It is also the l00th Test for West Indies opener Chris Gayle.
