Some island vibes took over Coney.
Labor Day weekend kicked off with one of the city’s biggest Caribbean music events on Sept. 1. Thousands of concert-goers attended “On Da Reggae and Soca Tip” at Ford Amphitheater on Coney Island Boardwalk for the annual concert hosted by radio station Hot 97. Many guests went to see live performances from some popular soca and dancehall artists, and even though some did not get to see all of their favorites they still enjoyed the concert, said one Flatbush woman.
“I didn’t get to see Bunji Garlin but I did see Konshens and Busy Signal, and it was a great night — I had lots of fun,” said Tekeya Prescod, who came with relatives.
The star-studded lineup included several big Caribbean stars, such as Sean Paul, Charly Black, Kranium, Rupee, and Kevin Lyttle.
Prescod says as her first time going to the yearly musical event, she was happy to enjoy the experience even though she arrived behind schedule and stayed to the end.
And she says the concert was a family get-together, and somewhat of a retreat away from daily life.
“I really loved just being there with my sister and cousins, dancing and enjoying the music,” she said. “We work hard and don’t have time to enjoy each other so it was a night of dancing with the family and I was really happy.”
