During World War II, the 92nd Buffalo Division, a segregated African American combat unit known as “The Buffalo Soldiers” fought a double battle, one against the Nazis in Italy, and one of racial discrimination, which was official United States policy. Though fighting and dying for the United States, they were ill treated by their country and their fellow American soldiers.
“Inside Buffalo” chronicles that double battle of these heroic soldiers. Director, Fred Kudjo Kuwornu, the son of a Ghanaian father and an Italian mother first became aware of these so-called “Buffalo Soldiers” when he worked with Spike Lee during the making of Lee’s “Miracle at St Anna.” After the film wrapped, Fred started doing research on this little known fact of the heroic Black soldiers fighting in Italy during World War II and their personal stories. That research resulted in Fred Kuwornu making “Inside Buffalo,” with Howard Fletcher, Joe Hairston, James McBride, Joe Stephenson and Spann Watson, directed by Fred Kuwornu.
Following the screening, Warrington Hudlin the founding president of Black Filmmaker Foundation (BFF), media community organizer, celebrated filmmaker, film curator, and Internet producer will engage in conversation with Fred Kuwornu followed by a Q&A with filmmakers and the audience.
