Barbadians in New York City commemorated their country’s 46th anniversary of independence in grand style, starting with a double celebration on Dec. 1&2.
They attended a sophisticated awards presentation and dance at Resorts World Casino New York City sponsored by the society of young Barbadian professionals (YBPS) and the annual service of thanksgiving Sunday, Dec. 2 at the Bedford Central Presbyterian Church, 1200 Dean St. in Brooklyn.
In her welcoming remarks at the Resorts World Casino, Renee Cutting, co-founder of YBPS said many Barbadian organizations were “proud to join forces to host the affair,” with the proceeds aimed at “benefitting families in our community who have been severely effected by superstorm Sandy.”
Also in attendance at the affair were Barbados Consul General Lennox Price and Mrs Price, songwriter and music producer David Pilgrim, as well as Junior Perry, president of the Council of Barbadian Organizations.
Highlight of the evening was the presentation of awards to members of the community who have made significant contributions to those in need. Maria Watson, co-chair, YBPS received a special acknowledgement: the Member of the Year Award.
Batch Productions, along with the 2012 Barbados Party Monarch and King of soca Michael “Mikey” Mercer provided entertainment for the evening.
In his remarks, Consul General Price expressed his sincere gratitude for the “wonderful job” done by the organizers of the anniversary tribute.
