The International Cricket Council has condemned the Guyana government’s interference in the functioning of cricket in Guyana. In a recent meeting in Dubai, the ICC Board took a stand against any government taking over and running cricket in any respective country.
Guyana Cricket Board Must Be The Ultimate Authority
The International Cricket Council will only recognize the local cricket authority through the umbrella of the WICB and no other entity in Guyana in regard to cricket. The ICC Board has strongly opposed the Guyana government’s actions.
Guyana Cricket Board Dissolved
The Guyana government through its sports minister dissolved the Guyana Cricket Board and replaced it with an Interim Committee headed by former West Indies Captain Clive Lloyd.
The Guyana government had dissolved the GCB due to a dispute regarding its July 2011 elections. The elections in which Ram Sat Ali became president were boycotted by some of the board’s constituent members, one of which the Berbice Cricket Board, took the GCB to court, claiming the new administration was not properly established.
Chief Justice Ian Chang ruled that there may be an immediate need for the minister responsible for sports to impose his executive will in the national interest, thus the Interim Committee was setup. The West Indies Cricket Board continues to reject the IMC as the authority in Guyana.
No Cricket In Guyana
The shifting of the Test match at the Guyana National Stadium due for April is imminent and regional, along with international cricket, may not be played at the stadium until this situation has been resolved.
