Despite the very cold weather, hundreds of community residents and officials on Saturday witnessed the community swearing-in ceremony for New York State Assemblyman Nick Perry.
Jamaican-born Perry, who represents the 58th Assembly District in Brooklyn, took the oath, in a Service of Thanksgiving, from New York Supreme Court Justice Barbadian-born Sylvia Hinds Radix.
The ceremony, which was presided over by Pastor Baldwin Barnes, took place at Christian Fellowship Seventh-day Adventist Church on Schenectady Avenue and Lenox Road in Brooklyn.
“It was quite inspiring to see several hundred constituents from all around the district come out in the frigid cold to celebrate this occasion with me, to witness me take my oath for the 12th time,” Perry told Caribbean Life afterwards.
“I am honored and feel quite privileged by their support, trust in me, and pledge to continue serving with honor and integrity, and make them proud to keep me working for them,” he added.
Dignitaries, among about 400 in attendance, included former Mayor David Dinkins, Sen. Charles Schumer, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, Kings Country District Attorney Ken Thompson, Public Advocate Letitia James, Assemblywoman Rodneyse Bichotte, and Councilman Matheiu Eugene.
The gala party that followed was at Holy Family Church on Flatlands Avenue in the Canarsie, Brooklyn was attended by Sen. John Sampson, Councilmen Jumaane Williams and Alan Maisel, Rep. Yvette Clarke, Assemblywomen Roxanne Persaud and Latrice Walker.
