Hilma Young was born in the St. Elizabeth parish of Jamaica. Little did a young Hilma know that she would follow her namesake — a nurse friend of the family named Hilma Titus. Ms. Young’s nursing career spans 28 years.
When she lost a classmate at the age of six, the seeds of a life in medical care were planted.
She recalls, “In high school in Jamaica I developed an interest in subjects such as biology, chemistry, and food and nutrition, and also I developed a caring and empathetic character.”
Attending University School of Nursing in Kingston, Ms. Young became more knowledgeable on hospital and home patient care, assisting doctors, and extending compassion to each and every patient. “To this day, I hold true to those skills and values,” she says.
From Jamaica, Ms. Young emigrated to the U. S., sponsored to work at Montefiore Hospital. During her years there, she met her future husband Clifford Young. She also obtained her BSN from the College of New Rochelle.
After marrying and moving from the Bronx to Brooklyn, the two decided to open up a medical office in Canarsie where they dedicate themselves to serving their patients with the utmost care and concern.
“Though there have been many influential people in my career, I could not have made it to this point in my career without the support of my tutor, friend, and husband of 24 years, Dr. Clifford Young,” she credits.
“He has shown me how hard work and determination mixed with empathy and understanding creates the best patient care. Through our partnership, he has helped me become the mother, leader, office manager, and nurse that I am today.”
