Guyana, led by Mark Woseley , won the first annual Caribbean Amateur Golf Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 18 at the Marine Park Golf Course in Flatbush, Brooklyn.
Team Guyana scored 22 points to come away with the historic victory in the four-team tournament. Team Trinidad and Tobago finished a close second (20 points), followed by Team Jamaica (17 points) and Team Barbados (13 points).
According to winning captain Woseley, “Spirits were high as great golf and great sportsmanship led the way around Brooklyn’s premiere golf venue.” Among the highlights of the tournament was Norman Young’s firing a low round of 74 to help the Trinidad and Tobago effort, and Team Guyana’s Karl Ramjeet, who shot a 78 to help boost the victory.
Woseley said the tournament witnessed a “great turnout” and that people are already talking about next year and expect more countries to participate. The hope is that at least four more countries will enter the tournament and a playoff structure will be introduced to determine the top four teams for the final stage in next year’s competition.
The general feeling among the golfers after the tournament is that Caribbean golf in the area has proven its potential and they are excited about the growth of the event in years to come at the Marine Park Golf Course, the home of Caribbean golf in New York.
