In her address to Guyanese on the 47th Republic of Guyana anniversary, Barbara Atherly, consul general of Guyana told nationals, “We as a people have a lot to celebrate — our rich history, or successful struggle for independence, and our cultural diversity,” and called on nationals to be vigilant.
While addressing the gathering at the diplomatic office in New York City, on Feb. 24, Atherly, added, “We in the Diaspora can now celebrate with pride and a deep sense of patriotism and freedom from colonial rule.”
“For us here in the United States of America, 2017 is a historic year. Things have changed dramatically, causing many in the Diaspora to feel stressed and concerned,” said Consul General, Atherly, adding that this is a time for “us to stand strong and support each other. We need to guard against rumors and remain vigilant.”
The diplomat said the Consulate stands ready to support our Guyanese brothers and sisters in whatever way possible. “We are also working assiduously with the CARICOM Consuls General Corps to ensure that collectively, we have a common response to the situation,” she assured the compatriots.
“To this end, we plan to meet with the New York Police Department and Homeland Security to address concerns.”
The consul general, again called on Guyanese to remain vigilant, observe the laws, and encouraged fellow citizens to at all times have a valid passport. She asked Guyanese who were present to encourage others to attend immigration forums and to also support others in their time of need.
“I take this opportunity to welcome you to this celebration organized by the Republic Day committee. Thanks for your sterling contribution, in making this a reality,” she said.
“As His Excellency, President David Granger pointed out in his Republic Day Message, it is particularly significant for all Guyanese. It is the 100th Anniversary of the Abolition of Indian indentureship, so this is an opportunity for the nation to celebrate the contribution of the Indian community.
“Let us come together, join hands and celebrate in unity so that we accomplish our motto of “One People, One Nation One Destiny.” Happy Mashramani, she concluded.
