Brooklyn Council Member Dr. Mathieu Eugene and the School Construction Authority (SCA) on Wednesday hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for P.S./I.S. 338 in Brooklyn.
The event was held at the construction site of the new Miam Fayyaz school on 510 Coney Island Avenue.
Eugene, who represents the 40th Council District, was joined at the ceremony by Lorraine Grillo, SCA president; Alvin Berk, chair, Community Board 14; District Manager Barry Spitzer, Community Board 12; Jacob Gold, district leader; Mohammad Razvi, executive director, Council of People’s Organization; Shahid Khan, president, National Youth of Pakistan; Matthew Wolf, general manager, Kings Theatre; and Miam Fayyaz, director, Royal Community Care Center Director, as well as many other government officials and community leaders.
The construction of P.S./I.S. 338 will begin in the spring of 2015, with a projected opening in September of 2017, Eugene said.
He said the school will be housed in a newly-constructed five-story building, with a seating capacity for 757 children ranging from pre-kindergarten through the 8th grade.
The facility will include two pre-kindergarten and three kindergarten classrooms, in addition to 29 standard classrooms, Eugene said.
He said P.S./ I.S. 338 will have a cafeteria and kitchen, medical office, library, gymnasium, guidance office and a parent/community room.
Additionally, Eugene said there will be specialized instructional spaces that will include a musical suite, art classroom and an art workroom, as well as a science room with work stations for primary students and a science lab for intermediate students.
There will also be outdoor recreational spaces that will include an early childhood playground and a schoolyard for older students.
“I am so excited that there will be a new school in my district for primary and intermediate school children,” Eugene said. “I am confident that the teachers will have the resources they need to provide their students with a fine education that will lead to academic achievement.”
“There is nothing more important to a child than being in a setting that fosters educational and intellectual growth, and I believe that P.S./I.S. 338 will provide such an environment for its students,” he added.
